WHEN TRUTH BECOMES HATE SPEECH
“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” (George Orwell's book 1984 was written in 1949)
It was 1964, the best of times and the worst of times. There was an invasion of the United States, but the good kind, when the Beatles brought their music across the pond. The economy was growing exponentially at one of the strongest growth rates in the postwar period. Inflation was 1.3%, and the price of gas was $0.30 per gallon. But it was also a turbulent time of the Cold War between the U.S. and Russia, the escalation of the Vietnam War, and the birth pains of civil rights in America. Why is this significant to understanding truth? In September 1964, I stood before Billy Graham, a worldwide-known evangelist. and declared Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. It’s been sixty-one years—nearly to the day—but the moment still glows in my mind as if time had never touched it. I embraced Christ and Biblical Truths, but, of course, I failed constantly. One of the most powerful Biblical Truths is found in 1 Corinthians 13:13. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. I’ve carried this Truth into every part of my life, both personal and professional. Before you decide I am some religious zealot and move on to the next blog, let me assure you I do not embrace “religion.” World history reflects terrible periods where religions oppressed and destroyed. Instead of 'religion,' I prefer the term “relationship.”I love the teachings of Jesus and consider my relationship with Him the most extraordinary and profound gift of my lifetime.
However, for the life of me, I cannot fathom, rationalize, or even begin to understand why my conservative beliefs are now deemed hateful by the liberals of this country. No longer the “radical left” but, in my experience, the entire Democratic Party. I want legal immigration so we can use our resources for our children who are failing in overcrowded schools due to cultures unwilling to assimilate into our country. I am now deemed bigoted. I believe God created man and woman; I am accused of marginalizing the gay community. I do not believe men belong in women’s sports, let alone in women’s locker rooms. I am labeled a transfobe. So why is Biblical Truth so offensive to those who attempt to shout down conservative voices?
Christianity defines truth as embodied in God and divine revelation. Islam views truth as being associated with Allah and divine order. Buddhism believes truth is the understanding of reality as it truly is, free from illusion. Gleaning from those definitions, I believe Truth (capital T) is embodied in the God of Christians and Jews, who established a divine order, free of illusions. But here is where the waters get muddied. The world views truth (lower case t) through many different lenses. Case in point:
Classical Theory of Truth (Aristotle) defines truth as what corresponds to reality. A statement is true if it accurately describes the way the world actually is.
Contemporary Theory of Truth (Hegel, Bradley) believes that truth is a matter of consistency within a system of beliefs. A statement is true if it logically fits with other beliefs we hold.
Wait, what? That last statement is, in my opinion, where the word “truth” took a hard left into hate speech. In other words, if you believe life does not start in the womb, that the existence of multiple genders is possible, and a sovereign nation should not have borders or laws, that is your truth. Those who cannot accept that truth and point out the disconnect with the God of Creation are accused of hate speech. I will not bend the knee to any ideology that professes godlessness. But I am commanded to love you unconditionally, because that is exactly what Jesus would ask of me. The definition of truth keeps shifting, so it’s challenging to keep up with the latest truth du jour. Read the following quotes and guess who might have said them.
“I have long opposed governmental recognition of same-gender marriages.”
“Marriage has historic, religious, and moral content that goes back to the beginning of time, and I think a marriage is as a marriage has always been, between a man and a woman.”
“I personally believe marriage is between a man and a woman.”
“I voted numerous times when I was a senator to spend money to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in. And I do think you have to control your borders.”
“Open borders? A proposal, which says essentially there is no United States... It would make everybody in America poorer — you're doing away with the concept of a nation state, and I don't think there's any country in the world that believes in that.”
“If you open the borders, my God, there’s a lot of poverty in this world, and you’re going to have people from all over the world… Can’t do it.”
“Allowing transgender women and girls to compete in female sports is deeply unfair.”
“As a former player, coach, and teacher, I believe men should be competing against men and women against women. Physical differences are very important for the safety of those participating in the sport.”
This politician signed the “FY25 National Defense Authorization Act into law, which included a provision blocking healthcare for the transgender children of military servicemembers. This action marked the first federal law restricting transgender rights since the Defense of Marriage Act.”
The above quotes are not from MAGA patriots, Charlie Kirk and Turning Point, or the Republican Party. They are all direct quotes from Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden; Secretary of State Hilary Clinton; California Governor Gavin Newsom; and Senator Bernie Sanders. Yes, these statements reflect their earlier views. That was their truth…then. They’ve reshaped their belief systems so that the 21st-century dogmas of gay marriage, open borders, and gender fluidity have become their new and improved “truths.” And anyone who dares to disagree with these progressive versions of truth is swiftly branded a promoter of hate speech. Who would have thought truth could be made so complicated?
CAPITAL T Truth FROM THE CREATOR
Gay Marriage: God, according to the Bible, sees marriage as a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, designed for companionship, reflecting Christ's relationship with the Church, and promoting lifelong faithfulness.
Abortion: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book they were all written, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them."
Two Genders: Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
Borders: Scripture indicates that God Himself set the boundaries of nations (Acts 17:26, Deuteronomy 32:8), establishing the "boundaries of their habitation".
Laws:
Oh no! I must be one of those hate-spewing Christians. Not so fast. If you disagree with me, I will refrain from resorting to name-calling. If you believe my truth is hateful, I will not protest at your business. If you do not believe in God, I will not label you stupid. If you hate my God and all He represents, I will not throw Molotov cocktails at your home. I don’t hate back on you because I am self-righteous and pious. On the contrary, your accusatory words crush my soul, but my Jesus DNA will not allow me to spite you. Hating on you would be comparable to putting poison into your water, and then I drink from the glass meant for you. Hate burns from the inside out, consuming time and space in our brains. Hate just takes too much energy and deprives us of the joy that could and should be ours.
THE AHA MOMENT
Have you had your “aha” moment yet? If you don’t believe in the divine God of the Scriptures, your idea of “truth” becomes flexible—shaped to fit whatever ideology you embrace. That flexibility can turn anyone who disagrees with you into a target of so-called “hate speech.” Charlie Kirk did not engage in hate speech. He spoke the Biblical Truths ordained by God. In response, a culture of activists, disconnected from moral grounding and the God of the universe, reacted with venom—labeling him a fascist, a homophobe, a white nationalist, a bigot, and a purveyor of hate. Left untethered by conscience and filled with distorted ideologies, they ultimately sought to destroy him. The bullet meant to blast instead blazed a path for this nation to boldly embrace the Truth.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth in 1 Corinthians 13:12: "For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.” In Paul’s time, mirrors were made of polished metal, so they didn’t reflect perfectly. That imagery emphasizes that we don’t see spiritual reality clearly now. The verse contrasts our present imperfect understanding with the clarity of knowing God fully in the future: “but then face to face”—meaning when we are in God’s presence, our understanding will be complete. Death will transport us to the presence of God-it’s unavoidable. Will you cling to your convenient “truth,” or bow to God’s holy, perfect Truth? Every lie you embrace, every compromise you make, will face the light. Truth is unstoppable. Truth is relentless. And it will expose every soul that dares defy it.
As Christians, we believe in redemption in the purest form through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. There is a path for this country for redemption…to recalibrate. It is simply this: The United States must confront the hate that tears at its soul. We cannot remain silent while fear and anger dictate our laws, our communities, our schools, and our hearts. Change demands courage: the courage to face uncomfortable truths, call out those who wish to destroy this country, and to choose compassion over vitriol. The path forward is not easy, but it is urgent. Only by standing together in empathy, accountability, and love can we reclaim a future defined not by hate, but by the enduring promise of God: He promises His presence now, His forgiveness through Christ, His guidance in life, and eternal joy in His kingdom.
